The weather may be cooling off, but that doesn’t mean the list of fun events in Sydney are slowing down. From the Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week to the world famous VIVID light, music and ideas festival, this month is all about celebrating the best of art, fashion and design.

Vivid Sydney – Light, Music and Ideas, Sydney 25 May – 16 June
The multi-award winning light, music and ideas festival, Vivid Sydney returns for its 10th year of iconic light installations and interactive events across the city centre. Be mesmerised as you follow the illuminating Light Walk, stretching over 2kms along the harbour foreshore from The Rocks to the Sydney Opera House and Royal Botanic Garden. Go beyond and discover more inspiring light installations across Barangaroo, Darling Harbour, Kings Cross, Chatswood and Taronga Zoo in Sydney’s North. In addition to the lights, Vivid will showcase some incredible Australian and international music acts, with performances from artists such as Solange, Ice Cube, Cat Power and St. Vincent. You’ll also get the chance to tap into some of the most brilliant minds across the art, tech and design industries, such as critically acclaimed film director James Cameron.
Archibald Prize Exhibition, Haymarket 12 May – 9 September
Once again, the annual Archibald Prize will be awarded this year to the best painting of a notable Australian. The paintings will feature prominent Australians across the field of politics, sport, music and entertainment. The lucky winner will walk away with a neat prize of $100,000 and enjoy the title of winning Australia’s foremost portraiture prize for the year. Head down to Casula Powerhouse Arts Centre, Western Sydney to check out the winning painting and other entrants in the exhibition. The event is open to all ages, and admission is completely free.
Reigning Men: Fashion in Menswear 1715-2015, Haymarket 2 May – 14 October
Fashion has never been just one for the ladies, a theme consist across the latest Reigning Men: Fashion in Menswear, 1715-2015 exhibition. Explore the rich history of men’s fashion and style over the centuries. Tracing back to the three-piece suit of the 18th century male aristocrat, all the way to the ultra-chic skinny suits and flowerteed tuxedos worn by the 21st century man. The exhibition features over 130 garments by renowned menswear designers from Alexander McQueen to Giorgio Armani, and is on display at Powerhouse Museum until mid-October. While you’re there don’t forget to check out the museum’s range of other permanent and temporary exhibitions. The event is brought to you by the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA) and presented by the MAAS Centre for Fashion.
Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Australia, Redfern 13 – 17 May
The Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week is Australia’s only international fashion platform and premier fashion and lifestyle event. The event will take place at Australia’s largest contemporary multi-arts centre of its kind, Carriageworks, Eveleigh, and will showcase Australia’s leading and most innovative fashion designers. Featuring a five-day schedule of non-stop fashion, filled with runway shows, presentations and key industry events, all from a curated selection of the most established Australian fashion designers and brightest emerging talent. Fashion-forward minds should be sure to mark this one on their calendars.
Good Design Awards, Redfern 17 May
The Good Design Awards program is one of the oldest and most prestigious international design awards on the globe, with this year marking its 60th anniversary. Join in and be inspired by the best of the best in design, across 10 different categories, from fashion to architecture. Enjoy guest performances from some of Australia’s top talent, along with special presentations from speakers such as Danish Architect Jan Utzon, son of Jørn Utzon who designed the Sydney Opera House. The awards will be presented at the iconic Sydney Opera House and will be followed by more celebrations at the official after party. Semi Permanent, Redfern 24 – 25 May
Semi Permanent is a “global creative and design thinking platform” with the sole purpose of celebrating design and bringing together those with a serious love for creating. At the end of this month, Semi Permanent will be running a three-day design-focused held at Sydney’s Carriageworks. This year’s focus is on exploring ‘creative tension as inspiration’, described as “those moments of positive and negative friction that come before a breakthrough”. Each of the three days will feature an amazing lineup of talks, panels and live experiences by some of the best local and international talents in the world of design. Get together with like-minded individuals and immerse yourself in all that is design.
James Cameron: Challenging the Deep, Darling Harbour 29 May
Following Vivid’s sold out event, Game Changer: James Cameron, those who missed out will still get a chance to dive deep into the creative genius that is critically acclaimed film director, James Cameron. The James Cameron: Challenging the Deep is an immersive exhibition launching at the end of May, following Cameron’s lifelong pursuits of and achievements in deep ocean science and technology, and exploration, as well his record-breaking dives in his very-own designed and built in Sydney submersible vessel, the Deep Sea Challenger. Head to the Australian National Maritime Museum to check out this incredible display.
